The Rule of Thirds Part 2 by Jake Aldrich of Epic Dallas Wedding Photography
If there are multiple subjects in the photo, the rule changes a little. Naturally, the subject in the foreground will command the most attention, but it is possible to use certain focal points to change which part of the image is the most striking. When shooting multiple subject, the top left becomes the weakest point, while the bottom right is the most prominent. Dallas wedding photographers use this trick during engagements and bride/groom portraits to keep the overall focus on the bride. She is, after all, the main reason for the big wedding day. Another option is to place the background subject on the right line and the foreground subject on the left, which makes them seem equally important. This can be somewhat confusing to the human eye, but is can also make some very impressive photos.
Another good practice to get into is placing the subject on the opposite line of the direction they’re facing. Basically, if someone is looking to the right, then place them on the left-hand line in your photos, creating a space into which they can be looking.
The Rule of Thirds in Portrait Photography
When you look at a portrait, at first glance it may look like a person centered in the frame, but this doesn’t mean that the photo isn’t following the rule of thirds. With a closeup single portrait, such as a bridal photo, the subject’s eye’s will be placed on the top line of the imaginary grid. If you have multiple subjects in your photo, then try to place all of the faces on a third line. Depending on how many people you have in your portrait, you may need to use both the top and bottom line for your subjects. Dallas wedding photographers often have to do this when taking group photos after the wedding.
