Camera Lenses – What to look for
There are many different types of lenses, with pros and cons to all of them. To a new photographer, it can seem like there are way too many types to choose from, and to a non-photographer they can seem like they’re all the same. Learning the differences can help you make a good decision when you’re building your camera collection.
Lenses 101
There are many types of lenses, but they usually fall into one of three categories: wide, normal, and telephoto. Each type of lens will give you a different perspective to the same scene, changing the perceived distance between the objects in your shot. A normal lens will give you a similar view as you would get when viewing a scene with your eyes. A wide angle lens is used to capture more in a scene, but it can also make the background appear farther away. The opposite is true for telephoto lenses, which capture a very specific subject, while making the making the background appear closer. Another type of lens that’s growing in popularity are zoom lenses, which allow you to change the focal length. A zoom lens usually combines two (or all three) of the other lens types. Dallas wedding photographers will usually have a wide-to-normal zoom lens, as these are useful in most situations.
Staying Stable
If you plan on shooting something that’s far away, you’ll want to have a telephoto lens. Whether you’re taking pictures of wildlife or a sporting event, telephoto lenses can magnify your subject so you can capture more detail. The main problem with telephoto lenses is that they magnify camera shake. The added weight and length makes a telephoto lens harder to hold still, and the longer focal length make small movements more noticeable. While tripods and monopods can help with this problem, it’s not always possible to have one with you. In recent years, lens manufacturers have been making lenses with stabilizers built in which can help reduce the camera shake. Dallas wedding photographers opt for the stabilized lenses to give them the sharpest pictures.
