This continues the previous article on lenses, and will give you more understanding of what to look for when shopping for a new lens.
Aperture Affects Speed
A big deciding factor when looking at which lens to buy is the maximum aperture. The aperture is the size of the lens’ iris, or the size of the hole that lets the light in. Changing the aperture does many things to your pictures, including affecting the necessary shutter speed. With a wider aperture, you need less time with the shutter open to get the right amount of light. If your aperture is very narrow, more time is needed to get the proper exposure.
Dallas wedding photographers often have to work in dimly lit buildings, such as churches or reception halls. That’s why they always opt for lenses with a very wide maximum aperture. The extra light captured by the wide aperture lets them take faster exposures, so there isn’t as much motion blur when shooting dancing and other movement. Keep in mind that the widest apertures are only available in the most expensive lenses.
What About Glass?
Compact cameras and off-brand lenses usually have parts of the lens made of plastic. This is fine for someone who just wants a camera to help them remember trips, but for Dallas wedding photographers plastic can be a problem. Light travels better through glass than through plastic, so in order to get the best possible image make sure that you get a lens that’s all glass.
Of course, all lenses have some minor reflections and refraction in the light they capture, but as you move away from plastic and get into better quality glass, the reflections can be minimized. This is another reason why lenses can be very expensive, but also why it’s important to get a good one.
