Understanding Depth of Field by Jake Aldrich of Epic Dallas Wedding Photography
A big aspect of a good photo is what is in focus versus what is out of focus. While it can be frustrating when first starting out that the whole scene isn’t in focus, good Dallas wedding photographers will use this fact to set their pictures apart from the rest.
The key to understanding depth of field is understanding how the lens views your subject. It doesn’t matter to the lens whether your subject is properly exposed, or how you have it composed. It only matters how far the subject is from the lens. A lens focuses based on distance, and everything at the focal distance will be in focus. Other things can be in focus as well, but everything at that distance is for sure.
That may seem a little confusing at first, but let me simplify it a little. Most photos can be divided into a foreground, middle ground, and background. The closest things to the camera are the foreground, and obviously the objects in the back will be the background. Sometimes the subject is in the foreground, but usually it’s located in the middle ground. It’s possible that all of the areas of the picture will be in focus, but this is where depth of field comes in. Simply put, depth of field is the distance from the focal point that’s still in focus. A narrow depth of field means that only the subject will be in focus, while a wide depth of field means that a lot of the photo is in focus.
The controlling factor for the depth of field is the f/stop. When you want to get a narrow depth of field to make your subject really stand out, you will want to use a very wide aperture (low f/stop number). Dallas wedding photographers will usually have a prime lens with a 1.4 maximum aperture for this very reason. If you need to get more in focus, such as a large group of people or a building, then you need to use a narrower aperture. An f/stop of f/10 will give you a much wider depth of field, capturing more of the scene in focus.
